University Choir Spring Concert

About this event

This year’s Spring Concert has a nature theme and will open with a performance of Twelve Trees, with music by Katy Lavinia Cooper and words written and compiled by Catriona Downie. Inspired by trees native to the British Isles, the twelve pieces that make up this work, delve into the history, folk lore and traditional music of these lands. Twelve Trees was commissioned to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Sing for Pleasure and was premiered last August. It is full of folk inspired tunes so, while being new, it's also very attractive to listen to. The choir has really enjoyed the challenges of learning and performing this piece.

The second half of the programme picks up on the theme of the natural world, with music by Bob Chilcott and Vaughan Williams, arrangements of familiar folk songs and solo performances from members of the choir.

The University Choir is made up of students, staff, alumni and members of the local community. They rehearse on Monday evenings during term time and welcome new members. Find out more about the Choir.

Israel’s peace movement offers a ray of hope amid the pain of Gaza conflict

The first thing I do when going back to Israel for a visit is go for a run. After more than two years abroad, it is a good opportunity to refamiliarise myself with the home I left to pursue my academic career more than eight years ago.
