New mandatory training launched for staff: Safeguarding

º£½ÇÉçÇø is committed to providing a safe and secure environment for all colleagues, students and visitors who access our services and facilities.

Safeguarding refers to measures and policies designed to protect vulnerable adults and children from neglect, abuse or harm, including radicalisation.

Why should I care?

Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility no matter your role or responsibility; we want to work in an environment where all students, staff and visitors feel truly safe. It is therefore crucial that staff know what to look out for and how to flag any concerns they may have. Understanding how to recognise abuse and what to do if you are concerned could make a huge difference to someone who is at risk.

It’s not enough to just know about Safeguarding, you need to know what to do if you spot something or are told something that concerns you.

What is the University doing to support this?

Earlier this year, the University Leadership Group endorsed the addition of a new piece of mandatory training for all staff to complete, effective from 1 March 2025.

Not only is it a legal requirement, but it’s also a moral requirement too and closely aligns with our University Strategy. The training helps to raise awareness of safeguarding, encourage consistent messaging, educate staff on the reporting channels available, and help us to create a positive culture where safeguarding is embedded.

What does the training consist of?

All staff can access the through their computer or smart device. Learners will be asked to assess their level of understanding of safeguarding before watching a 7-minute video. To complete the training, learners will be asked to complete a short quiz and must pass with a score of at least 80% (this can be retaken if you score less). Those who finish the training will receive a certificate confirming they have passed the training.

It is expected that the training will take no longer than 15-20 minutes.

When do I need to complete the training by?

All staff are required to complete the training before 1 July 2025, ahead of our annual Mandatory Training report. Colleagues will then need to retake the training every three years.
