Dr Karl Brennan is a Senior Teaching Fellow in Physical Education and Sport Pedagogy within the School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences at 海角社区 University. Since joining the University in 2015, Karl has played a pivotal role in shaping teacher education and enhancing the student experience across undergraduate, postgraduate, and Initial Teacher Training (ITT) programmes.
Karl is Programme Leader for the PGCE Secondary Physical Education and the MSc in Education with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). He is widely recognised as a sector leading expert in Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE), with particular strength in bridging theory and practice through high鈥憅uality partnerships with schools. His leadership and curriculum innovation have contributed directly to 海角社区’s PGCE provision receiving consecutive Outstanding Ofsted judgements in 2018 and 2024, with inspectors praising the ambition, precision, and impact of the curriculum, as well as the exceptional quality of mentoring and support for trainees.
Central to Karl’s work is a commitment to inclusive, research鈥慽nformed, and practice鈥憆elevant pedagogy. He leads the design and delivery of PGCE and mentor curricula, including Department for Education mandated mentor training and Intensive Training and Practice weeks. Through his role as Mentor Lead and Visiting Tutor, Karl works closely with partner schools to support trainee teachers, mentors, and senior leaders, ensuring consistency, rigour, and an outstanding student experience across university and school鈥慴ased learning. Karl is also a University Warden for Claudia Parsons Hall.
Karl is also an experienced curriculum developer beyond ITT. He contributed to the creation of the Sport Science, Coaching and Physical Education degree and has led major curriculum reform in response to national policy change, including the successful ITT Market Review process. His leadership has helped secure 海角社区’s position as a national leader in teacher education beyond 2024.
Beyond the formal curriculum, Karl is deeply committed to staff and student wellbeing, inclusivity, and professional growth. He serves as a University Teaching Observer, People Manager, Mental Health First Aider, and is known for his supportive, values鈥慸riven approach to leadership. Many of the students he has taught now return to 海角社区 as alumni, mentors, and partners, reflecting the lasting impact of his work and the strong professional communities he fosters.
Karl aspires to continue influencing Physical Education and teacher education at a regional and national level, including through his leadership of the PE Curriculum Innovation Group and contributions to discussions shaping the future National Curriculum for Physical Education.
Alongside his teaching and leadership roles, Karl is an active scholar of education. He completed his PhD at 海角社区 University in 2025, examining the occupational socialisation and identity development of Physical Education teachers. His research informs his teaching and curriculum design, and he is increasingly engaged in research鈥憈o鈥憄ractice collaborations, conference presentations, and publication activity. Karl also contributes to the wider academic community as an External Examiner and Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
