Your safety matters

SafeZone is a free safety app for all students and staff that connects you to 海角社区 University's 24/7 Security team. Whether it's an emergency, a first aid need, or you want peace of mind while working or studying late, SafeZone is designed to help at the tap of a button.

Register using your 海角社区 University email address to access the full range of campus features.

Protecting your Privacy

SafeZone was developed with a strong focus on protecting your privacy and is fully GDPR compliant. Your location will only be shared when you:

  • Check-in*
  • Send a report (optional)

You control your profile data and the reporting tool allows you to send information anonymously. You can find out more information on the .

* Note: For checking in your phone will request you set location sharing to 'always'. This permits the app to run in the background. Location data will only be shared in the circumstances described above.

Key features

Emergency help

Press the red button to alert the 海角社区 University Security team immediately in an emergency. You can also call 999 directly from the app - we'll be notified of this, so we can support you straight away.

First aid

Are you injured or feeling unwell? Tap the green ‘First Aid’ button to get help quickly for you or other people in need from the nearest registered first aider. You can update your SafeZone profile with any medical conditions that you want us to be aware of. This helps first responders give you the right care, faster.

Non-emergency support

Need assistance, but it's not an emergency? Press the blue ‘Non-Urgent’ button to chat or call for help.

Check-in

Working or studying late alone? Tap ‘Check In’ so we know you're on campus. Don't forget to check out when you leave. You can also set a timer - if it runs out and we don't hear from you, we'll check in to make sure you're okay.

Report safety concerns

Spotted something worrying? Report any issues or suspicious activity you see on campus. You can choose to stay anonymous, but this may limit how effectively we can respond.

Safety alerts

Stay updated with real-time campus alerts and safety updates. You can also receive alerts from other participating universities, if you activate the ‘SafeZone Alliance’ feature.

Visit the SafeZone website to find out more about the app, how it works and how it can help keep you and those around you safe.

Frequently asked questions

Can I be made to use the SafeZone system on my personal phone?

No. If you are using a personal phone, the University does not have a mandate to make you  install the app onto your phone.

However, if there are certain activities that are high-risk, where the expectation is that you might need to carry them out alone, the University is allowed to make a decision as to whether they will allow you to carry out that task if the safety controls without the use of SafeZone are not sufficient.

If you do not have a phone, there is the option to use the Desktop PC version of SafeZone.

Will the SafeZone app drain my phone battery?

No – extensive testing of the app across multiple organisations has shown that battery life is unaffected – it simply sits in the background until you require it.

Are there any other ways to use SafeZone instead of through a phone?

Yes. A Desktop app is accessible to all University PCs by agreement with IT Services. Just contact it.services@lboro.ac.uk and they will add to the software centre for direct deployment.

Note: The Desktop app is discouraged as it has limited functionality compared to the mobile phone app. The Desktop App may suit colleagues without a Mobile Phone and/or sit on reception desks where accessing the desktop is easier and more discreet than a phone to raise alerts.

Can SafeZone track my location? Can others see me when I'm off campus?

By default, the app does not share your location with anybody. The app will ask you to ensure that location services are activated, but nothing is shared until you have pressed either the Red Emergency or Green First Aid buttons. Your location will also be shared if you click the Check-in buttons. Your location cannot be shared if you are outside of the campus e.g. if you are at home. Just having the app open DOES NOT share your location.

First Aid Responders might be asked to use the check in function when they are on campus – this allows security to see their location and contact them if there is a reported first aid incident nearby.

Locations are never shared with anyone else, including other first aid responders.

Does SafeZone share my personal details with others?

The only details SafeZone holds is your name, email address and phone number - no other details are stored in the system.

As a user of the SafeZone app, if you raise an alert then LU Security Responders are notified. They will see your name, your phone number, and your location, but only if you are within the Campus/Town geofence. They will also see any other information you have entered onto the SafeZone app which is relevant to you, such as a medical condition or disability.

Does SafeZone still work if I don鈥檛 have Wi-Fi or mobile signal?

SafeZone requires a phone and/or Wi-Fi signal. Without either of these, functionality becomes limited.

It is still possible to use the Check-in function if you know you are intending to be working in an area of low signal. If you anticipate that a task may take a certain amount of time, you can check in whilst signal is still available, and if you are unable to get to an area with a signal before the timer is up, the alert will still be sent.

Alerts can still be raised via SMS if you are in areas with limited internet. Alternatively, if a wired internet connection is available, the Desktop PC version of SafeZone can be used.

What if I don't want to use personal mobile data and only want to use Wi-Fi? Can I still use SafeZone?

Yes, absolutely. The SafeZone app works well with full functionality  for most phones via Wi-Fi only.

You will still be able to share location (if you're raising an alert), receive messages from LU Security Responders (as well as send them), and make/receive calls if your phone has Wi-Fi calling enabled (which most modern phones now do).

If you’re based somewhere on campus with intermittent Wi-Fi, and you don’t want to use your personal mobile data, but you have access to a PC with internet, a Desktop web app is to be made available shortly. Details on these will come in future training/guidance material.

Can SafeZone be used off campus?

海角社区 University have geofenced the Campus for all staff and students, and 海角社区 Town for students only.

Outside of the geofence area, the Red Emergency button or Green First Aid button will not connect you to responders on the University site, rather they will prompt you to call 999.

If a person is having a cardiac arrest and the red Emergency button is pressed, will local First Aiders be warned?

When the emergency button is pressed, this will be received instantly by the Security team, who will respond.

Where circumstances necessitate, and it is clear a first aider is near to the location of the caller, then security may contact that first aider to attend initially.

Can I press the button to send an alert on behalf of another person who needs aid?

If a person needs help and they are unable to activate an alert themselves, you can and should request aid via SafeZone on their behalf if it is needed.

海角社区 University Security can then liaise with you as the primary contact to help the person get the help they need.

If I'm First Aid Trained and there is an incident near me that I can react to immediately, do I need to report it through the app?

No. The purpose of the app is to get help to somebody when they need it i.e. it is there to summon help where it may not be obviously available to the user.
If help is already available, then  there is no need to report anything using the app.

Are response logs/chat logs from the system maintained?

The system maintains all alerts raised, as well as any chat/photos sent through the system. These are maintained in the system for three years.

Does the system work out-of-hours?

The system works 24/7 within the geofence location(s). Outside the geofence location, any alerts raised will prompt the caller to dial 999.

If you are lone working you are encouraged to use the check-in function.

Security will respond 24/7 to any alerts within the geofence area(s).
