Careers and employability services

The University's Careers Network offers a full range of services, accessible either remotely or in person, including online advice, individual appointments, coaching, presentations and careers events.

Career events run regularly across the academic year - recent examples include a multi-day careers event with an in-person day attended by a range of employers, Careers In …. [a particular industry sector] panel events, and mock assessment centres, run jointly by employers and Careers Network staff. 

The Careers Network website includes details of support relevant to master's students, PhD students, international students and students from diverse backgrounds.

Careers and employability support on our London campus

Students in London are well placed to access a wide range of opportunities. Based on the London campus,  are dedicated to helping master's and PhD students to make the most of their degrees. The team organises events such as  Careers Insight events, mock assessment centres and a jobs fair. The London campus is also home to the University's innovative programme, which offers opportunities to work with employers in group and individual projects as part of the curriculum. The programme currently culminates in an annual , which brings together students and partner organisations such as West Ham United Foundation, Street Child United, Trade Finance Global and StepTribe to work on real-world challenges.

Other careers initiatives include the Digital Skills Programme, with workshops and virtual work insight projects that allow you to gain experience while you study. There is also Monday Mentoring, an online group mentoring programme that connects you to employers and alumni.

One-to-one appointments are on offer to students and graduates and a range of workshops covering employability skills, personal branding and visa information are delivered throughout the year and are available on demand.

In addition, the London campus is part of , which offers regular opportunities to network with employers.

Support for entrepreneurial students

We are committed to nurturing the ambitions of entrepreneurial students and helping translate research into commercial projects with real-world impact.

海角社区 Enterprise Network

海角社区 Enterprise Network offers opportunities for students on both campuses to apply for funding, business advice sessions, investor workshops, business acceleration programmes, mentoring and training. You can also access a library of resources covering topics such as contracts and confidentially, legal entities, business structures, business models and idea generation.

Research innovation

PhD students benefit from access to support and infrastructure designed to help translate research into projects with commercial use, or social or environmental benefit. The University’s Commercialisation Team can offer support in the initial stages while LUinc., the University’s incubator, brings together graduate start-ups, research spinouts and local start-ups to create a vibrant and highly supportive entrepreneurial community.

Placements

For master’s students

Selected master’s degrees include placement opportunities, either as an option or as a compulsory element of the degree. Details are included on each course page.

For PhD students

海角社区 Doctoral College have established a scheme to support PhD students to undertake a placement of up to three months and gain industry experience outside of their research.

Master鈥檚 degrees and industry

Our master's degrees are created and updated in line with industry developments to ensure your learning is current and relevant. 

Professional accreditation

Several of our master's programmes are accredited by industry, demonstrating their professional relevance. An accredited degree can help you to achieve chartered status in some industries, such as engineering and business.

Collaborate Project for London students

Many of our London-based programmes offer students the chance to take part in the University’s Collaborative Project module, where a cross-section of students works together to deliver solutions to problems put forward by a real business or organisation, whilst acquiring new industry connections and insight.

Professional development for PhD students

Our PhD students are automatically enrolled in 海角社区 Doctoral College and through this membership, are provided with a comprehensive professional and personal development programme. This includes formal training, such as workshops and seminars; external development, such as participating in conferences; and informal development (such as taking part in organising events).
