Upgrade for university-managed devices
Volunteers needed for early Windows 11 upgrade 
We are seeking volunteers to upgrade their devices ahead of the launch date. Your participation will help our technical teams thoroughly stress-test the full user experience, ensuring a smooth rollout for everyone. 
The upgrade will take place between Monday 14 October and Friday 18 October.

Microsoft Windows 11 is the new and improved operating system that will be rolled out to university-managed laptops and desktops, including computer labs, from November 2024 onwards.
The current operating system, Windows 10, is approaching the end of its lifespan and will no longer be supported after October 2025.
Upgrading to the Windows 11 version will ensure users are supported with the latest features, security, and functionality to support collaborations, teaching and learning.

W11 Responsibilities - Staff & PGRs
The following outlines W11 upgrade responsibilities and expectations for end users.
Windows Users
Users are to be informed of good practice in preparation for Windows 11, the following lists activities and expectations of them:
- Copying files from their computer to OneDrive or a suitable storage medium
- Flagging any specialist software – i.e Jaws that needs to be installed by IT Staff
- Flagging if the device needs to be upgraded/returned due to a business critical need
- Expecting to have a different device provided at the upgrade clinic to their current device
- Noting any software that they have installed on the device themselves
- Booking on to a clinic at least 3 days before the upgrade
- Attending the clinic at the booked slot
- Informing IT Staff at the clinic of any device issues, missing power cables, etc
- Checking the device on receipt
- Installing compliant software from software centre after their upgrade
- Completing the W11 introduction videos/media
W11 Responsibilities - Change Champions
The following lists areas that Change Champions may assist with to deliver an improved upgrade experience for users.
Change Champions
- Disseminate information on the upgrade process, enrolment steps, and supporting activities
- Tailor messages for the targeted audience
- Feed information back to the project and service teams to ensure user requirements and issues are considered
- Capture details of users with multiple devices
- Identify users that need any special measures/considerations
- Advise users the need for a sound business case for multiple devices and non-managed software
- Capture information on business-critical software for the department and/or user
- Identify any departmental periods that may affect upgrades (i.e clearing, end of year, etc)
- Consider being an early adopter of the service to assist with queries and local problem solving
- Signpost colleagues to W11 learning material
- Champion the changes and new service
- Act as a point of contact for users in their department/school
- Assist with local change management activities
Change Champions Network
To help support the upgrade, we are reaching out to colleagues across the organisation who can act as Change Champions in their respective Departments.
These Change Champions will act as conduits between end users and the project team to ensure 2-way communication, support, and guidance is available as colleagues transition to the new Services.
Activities will include:
- Becoming early adopters to participate in the pilot stage, with access to the new operating system being made available this summer.
- To champion the new Service in your area
- Capture local information and feed into the project teams
- Disseminate business-critical information to your colleagues
- Assist with booking device upgrades and handovers
