Public Lecture: RAeS - Genesis of the Jet
- 21 November 2023
- 7.30pm-9pm
This presentation by Ian Whittle will describe the earliest proposal for turbojet propulsion.
Ian's father, Frank Whittle proved by calculation that the turbine had the potential to be a huge success for aero propulsion, concluding that jet propulsion derived from the gas turbine was the most feasible way forward. He then designed what we now know to have been a practical form of turbojet, a creation that has had a massive impact on the modern world as we know it today.
In this lecture, Ian will outline the difficulties and delays that beset the introduction of the technology whilst being developed in the UK and the subsequent development in Germany and the USA with some flying adventures thrown in.
