Speech Bubble: Performance poetry event featuring Joelle Taylor

LU Arts is running its popular performance poetry event featuring student performers alongside a headline performance by professional poet Joelle Taylor. Speech Bubble will be held on Monday 20 November from 7.30pm in The Lounge, LSU.

Speech Bubble is pleased to welcome professional poet Joelle Taylor as the headline performer for this event. She is the author of four collections of poetry with her most recent collection C+NTO & Othered Poems winning the 2021 T.S Eliot Prize, and the 2022 Polari Book Prize for LGBT authors. C+NTO is currently being adapted for theatre with a view to touring. She is a co-curator and host of Out-Spoken Live at the Southbank Centre and tours her work nationally and internationally in a diverse range of venues, from Australia to Brazil. She is also a Poetry Fellow of the University of East Anglia and the curator of the Koestler Awards 2023. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, and the 2022 Saboteur Spoken Word Artist of the Year.

After her performance, Joelle will be selling and signing copies of her book.

Earlier in the evening (6pm-7pm) there is a special opportunity for students to sit down with Joelle in a Q&A session. It’s a chance to hear more about her career and for budding poets to get some advice. This session is free but must be booked in advance as places are very limited.

Tickets for Speech Bubble are free for students and £5 for general admission (18+). Tickets are available on the door (subject to availability), but advance booking is recommended.

This year’s Speech Bubble events are being organised by our Speech Bubble Co-ordinator for 2023/24 Anna Shipman, an enthusiastic MA student in Creative Writing. During her three years as an undergraduate student, Anna harnessed the art of creative writing to boost her self-confidence and is now determined to extend that support to others. Anna's passion extends to her role in organising Speech Bubble events, which promise to shine a spotlight on º£½ÇÉçÇø's spoken word talent and create welcoming and exhilarating evenings for all attendees.
